The Role of Employees in Your Data Security

It’s easy to confuse data security with a strong firewall and other protections against cyber attacks. This aspect of the concept is undoubtedly important to making sure that any confidential and data you store remains safe; however, it’s far from the entire strategy. In fact, your employees may be the single biggest determinant on whether or not your data will stay safe over time.

In fact, IT specialists believe that employees present the biggest of all risks to your data security efforts. That’s because, often by error, they can make sensitive information easy to breach for those intentionally or unintentionally looking to leak it. A password that’s just a little too simple, or a hard drive that is not properly disposed of, might be all that is needed for a party who should not gain access to your data do just that.

As a result, you need to make sure that you minimize your employees’ role in potential data breaches. That means thorough training, both in general cyber security issues and more specific actions related to them. Everyone, for instance, should know how to identify potential phishing issues and choose passwords that will keep any data secure. At the same time, some of the considerations also have to get more specific.

A large part of that consideration is connected to properly disposing of old hardware. When old computers give rise to new units, or you no longer need old storage files, it’s not enough to simply take them to dispose of them in a way that would be enough for other electronics.
