Data Security in the Age of Data Breaches

These days, stories of data breaches are becoming even more commonplace. You can scarcely go a few weeks without hearing another tale of a company with a data breach, resulting in the theft of millions of credit card data files. We live in an age of information where data breaches are, sadly, quite commonplace. This situation means that data security is more important than ever before.

Cloud Storage

More and more data these days is being stored in the cloud. We are putting massive amounts of information in a space where you can access said data from pretty much anywhere. It allows employees to access it remotely from any location on earth. Not only that, but it also puts it in the cloud for any potential hackers to access. Many of these companies can and do get hacked. This can make you feel pretty helpless and reluctant to use cloud services with the amount of data theft that takes place.

What to Do

But what you need isn’t more competition to make companies do a better job. No, what you need is data security. While saying “make your security better” is pretty unhelpful, the best way to keep your information safe from hackers is to follow data security best practices concerning choosing and sharing your password and check your personal information (check credit card statements for suspicious transactions, take note of any suspicious logins to your accounts, etc.). Beyond that, it is extremely important to react to any breaches as fast as you possibly can. The sooner a storage company knows about a breach, the sooner they can do something about it. So, if you suspect a login is a suspect attempt to access your data, inform the relevant parties immediately and change your password right away to prevent future attempts from succeeding.
