For Reliable Blu-ray Destruction Don’t Roll the Dice

In this age of information and so-called “big data,” every day vasts amount of information are generated. So much that it is hard to quantify in numbers. Try 2.5 times 10 to the power of 18 bytes worldwide. Consequently, the relative importance of just one 128-gigabyte Blu-ray disk seems to pale in comparison to the big picture.

Unless, of course, that big picture involves the data security of your company. Consider the following storage capacity data of just one gigabyte of a multimegabyte Blu-ray disk:

  • A thousand bytes (a kilobyte) is about 20 lines of text; 2,500 bytes would equate to about one full page of text.
  • A thousand kilobytes (one megabyte) holds about 400 pages of text, equivalent to a long book.
  • A thousand megabytes (a gigabyte) can store 1,000 books without graphics. Similarly, 1,000 pictures would take up one gigabyte.

We could go on to terabytes (a thousand gigabytes), but you get the picture. What we described above is just the storage capacity of a single gigabyte. As previously mentioned, Blu-ray disks can store up to 128 gigabytes.

The point is that even though your storage media occupy a small niche in the big picture of data storage, your Blu-ray, old DVDs and CDs still contain vast amounts of information. In the wrong hands they could be a source of compromise or embarrassment that could ruin your reputation and put you out of business.

So if your storage, media or product base includes creating, processing and disposing of Blu-ray disks, how do you ensure complete and secure destruction of your media?

By “complete and secure,” we don’t mean breaking or shredding, because neither method meets minimal security standards, given the compactness of the data storage technology. If you have compliance regulations to follow, or your proprietary data needs protection, you need to ensure that your media migrates from storage units to recyclable powdery residue.
